BayStartUP is one of Europe's three leading startup hubs. In the latest “Europe's Leading Startup Hubs 2026” ranking by the Financial Times and Statista, the Bavarian startup infrastructure organization came in third place across Europe, joining the top tier of startup support institutions in Europe.
BayStartUP has improved significantly compared to the previous year (11th place in 2025) and has established itself as one of the most efficient startup hubs in Europe. The international award highlights the quality of startup support in Bavaria and the lasting impact of long-term structures for growth and early-stage financing.
Europe's Leading Startup Hubs 2026: 3rd place for BayStartUP
The “Europe's Leading Startup Hubs” ranking is considered one of the most prestigious European benchmarks for startup support organizations. Among other things, it evaluates alumni satisfaction (independent founder survey), the track record of the startups supported, the quality and reach of the network, international visibility, and impact.
The ranking is based primarily on an independent alumni survey of founders who have completed programs at the evaluated institutions over the past five years.
Alumni confirm quality and effectiveness
The alumni evaluation in the Financial Times ranking confirms the quality and relevance of the support provided by BayStartUP.
Structured consulting, high-quality business planning, and professionally assisted financing processes make a measurable contribution to the capitalization of startups and their strategic positioning in the market.
Dr. Carsten Rudolph, Managing Director of BayStartUP:
This ranking confirms that we are on the right track. We have been investing in resilient structures for startup growth for many years. The fact that our alumni are now making this impact visible across Europe is both confirmation and motivation. Our goal is to further develop Bavaria into one of the most productive startup ecosystems in Europe – open, quality-oriented, and internationally engaged.
Barbara Dombay, Managing Director of BayStartUP:
BayStartUP does not see itself as a selective promoter, but rather as an infrastructure player in the Bavarian innovation ecosystem. The goal is to achieve a sustainable structural impact: creating access, ensuring quality, stabilizing connections, and enabling growth—independent of short-term trends or individual flagship projects.
Bavaria's Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger says:
BayStartUp's top ranking shows that we are on the right track with our start-up support. Bavaria is the most successful federal state in terms of the number of new start-ups – and that is no coincidence. We support start-ups throughout Bavaria with coaching, infrastructure, networks, and capital. Every euro and every effort we invest in our young entrepreneurs is worth its weight in gold. Because today's entrepreneurs are the guarantors of the competitiveness of our economy tomorrow.
30 years of structured startup infrastructure in Bavaria
For 30 years, BayStartUP has been developing and operating a comprehensive startup infrastructure that connects founding teams with investors, industry, SMEs, and relevant networks at an early stage—across all phases and throughout Bavaria.
Around 50 percent of the 800 startups supported each year come from Munich and the surrounding area, with the remaining 50 percent coming from the rest of Bavaria – from Hof to Kaufbeuren, from Deggendorf to Munich. This breadth is a central element of the Bavarian startup support structure.
Since 2015, BayStartUP has facilitated around 720 million euros in 650 early-stage financing rounds. In 2026, the Bavarian Business Plan Competitions recorded a 43 percent increase in participation in their first competition phase compared to the previous year. Since their establishment 30 years ago, around 11,000 startups have taken part in the competitions.
Structured access to the Bavarian start-up ecosystem
BayStartUP supports high-growth tech start-ups as well as innovative, sustainably financed medium-sized companies. The organisation offers investors and companies structured access to the Bavarian start-up deal flow.
Start-up teams are supported according to clearly defined quality criteria and prepared for financing processes – from the early phase to scale-up. Integration into the BayStartUP network strengthens credibility with investors, increases the quality of pitches and improves access to seed and growth financing.
International recognition through data-based evaluation
